Organ transplantation is one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine, which helps save thousands of lives every day. With the help of organ donors, who are the true heroes of the industry, organ procurement offers recipients a second chance at life.

Even though organ donation is a noble act, there is still a lack of organ donors. A single organ donor can save at least 8 lives by donating organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines and pancreas, alongside tissue, skin, bone marrow and bones. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting is 3 to 4 times greater than the number of transplants actually performed.

A significant percentage of these transplants fail due to inadequate methods of transportation. When the collection process is in place, every minute counts. Between the time the organ is removed and the time it is transplanted, it should not exceed 3 to 4 hours for a heart, 12 to 18 hours for a liver, 6 to 8 hours for a lung, 24 to 36 hours for a kidney. These times are averages which depend on the condition of the organ. However, the shorter the time, the better the outcome of the transplant.

Many transplants fail due to the poor condition of the graft on arrival: The Federation of Associations for the Donation of Human Organs and Tissues (ADOT) estimates that nearly 10%, each year in the world, of transplants kidney cells are performed under abnormal conditions. In the United States between 1000 and 1200 people die following an organ transplant, because on the arrival of the organ (heart, kidneys, liver), it turns out to have been transported under bad conditions and is no more usable.

In the United States, only 27% of available hearts are actually used for transplantation, not least because the recipients are not located within a radius close enough to the donor.

Why LifeinaBioBag is important

Taking into account Lifeina's experience in generating long-lasting cold, we have developed LifeinaBioBag, an innovative solution for the transport of blood, plasma and organs. Organs start to break down as soon as they are removed. When shipped cold, they are no longer viable after a while. Kidneys can last up to 36 hours on ice, but hearts and lungs can only be kept out of the body for about four to six hours.

LifeinaBioBag uses a combination of two main technologies, which are phase change materials and a new generation of flexible Aerogel. The combination of these two avant-garde technologies ensures a perfectly constant cold curve between 2 and 8 ° C for 48 hours.
